John Henry Slides

Slide 1:
John Henry was born a slave but was freed after the war.

Slide 2:
He worked as a steel driver for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad company. John Henry was the strongest, most powerful man working the rails.

Slide 3:
While building the railroad they ran into a mighty enemy, The Big Bend Mountain. So the bug bosses had to make a decision.

Slide 4:
The C & O Railroads bosses decided instead of going around the mountain they want to go straight through it. Whit that choice being made it came with consequences.

Slide 5:
Thousands of men lost their lives before the great mountain was conquered. Henry would drill tirelessly, drilling with a 14-pound hammer and going 10 to 12 feet in one workday. No one could match him, not even get close.

Slide 6:
One day a salesman came and brought a steam powered drill. He claimed it could out drill any man working.

Slide 7:
            Henry challenged the salesman.

Slide 8:
Henry picked up two 20-pound hammers and go to starting line.

Slide 9:
Henry drilled two 7-foot holes while them machine only drilled 1 9-foot hole.

Slide 10:
Right after celebrating his victory he fell to ground. It was to late, a blood vessel burst in his brain and he died.

Slide 11:

Some say if you walk to the edge of the blackness of the tunnel you can hear the sound of two 20-pound hammers drilling their way to victory over the machine.
